In early October, I traveled to Olympic National Park to present some training at Islandwood, the educational facility located on the shores of Lake Crescent. As I arrived, a storm was blowing in over the lake, blanketing its north side in clouds and driving waves across the water toward the southern beach. Right in the middle of all the gray weather, a bright yellow kayak rested on the beach, drawing me and my camera like a magnet. I literally pulled in to the parking lot, grabbed my camera, and went straight to the water's edge, where I spent five minutes standing in the gathering storm photographing the kayak as the light shifted and changed around me. This image is my favorite -- I love the way the afternoon light, breaking momentarily through the clouds, illuminates the translucent kayak.
