Photo of the day: Pond at dusk

Pond at dusk, a photo by The Bacher Family on Flickr.

This was one of those scenes that I spotted on my way past in my car, which prompted me to turn around and go back. This is why I like to travel with my camera! The foggy light of dusk created a beautiful moody light on the still water of a pond on the west edge of Eatonville. The half-submerged fence in the foreground adds texture to the image, in contrast to the fog in the background.

Gallery of the day: I cannot keep from dancing

Inspired by the wonderful collection called "Dancers Among Us," online at, I went back through my collection of photos over the years to find similar images of family and friends, captured in spontaneous moments of exuberance. In my case, none of the people in my photos are actually dancers, and with just a few exceptions all are candid and unposed. There's just something within us that cannot keep from dancing.

View the slide show on my website to see it full-screen with accompaniment.

Photo of the day: First cousin, once removed

This is my wife's cousin's daughter. What a beautiful young woman she's turning into, don't you think?

Photo of the day: Starry Hill Observatory

The brand new Starry Hill Observatory and Planetarium, northwest of Eatonville, makes a great place for school groups to go on field trips. The Eatonville High School freshman science class visited in mid-December, enjoying a custom planetarium show and a demonstration of the iPad-controlled reflecting telescope. I snapped this shot during the demonstration, using the available red-tinted lights under the dome.

Photo of the day: Eli in the rain

Our final set of photos in Eli's Senior Portrait photoshoot were on the edge of a meadow with the hillside visible through the rain behind him. It's unconventional, for a Senior Portrait, though it makes for quite an interesting picture, immersed in the environment, so to speak.

Photo of the day: Eli in Ashford Park IV

Another favorite from Eli's Senior Portrait photoshoot. I had walked the trails of Ashford County Park ahead of time, and spotted this bench, set against the wintery hillside, and marked it as a good spot for portraits. He thought so too. There were so many options here -- sitting, standing, leaning -- though under actual conditions, with the rain misting down around us and puddling on the bench, sitting and leaning weren't good choices! So we opted for this pose, which turned out quite well under the circumstances.

Photo of the day: Eli in Ashford Park III

One of my favorite photos from Eli's photoshoot is this one, standing on the path in Ashford County Park near his home. I love the orange and yellow colors of late autumn behind him, the gray-barked trees fading into the distance in the misty rain, and the Letterman jacket covered with patches symbolizing all of the things Eli participated in during his four years of high school.

Photo of the day: Eli in Ashford Park II

Here's an image from my senior portrait photo series with Eli that I think looks just as good in black and white as in color. What do you think?

Photo of the day: Eli's fedora

I really like this image of Eli, which captures his personality well -- positive, intelligent, creative, unique. The hat was something he insisted on; he wears it a lot at school, and it really does set him apart in a unique way. This was one of the first photos we took, in his own back yard, in front of a green hedge.

Photo of the day: Outtake

Outtake by The Bacher Family
Outtake, a photo by The Bacher Family on Flickr.
My first-ever Senior Portrait photo session happened, unfortunately, in the rain. Eli was constrained by a number of factors, including a deadline to turn in his photos and a double wisdom tooth extraction, so when the appointed day dawned gray and drizzly, we decided to go ahead with the photoshoot anyway and see what we got. I was actually pleased with the results in spite of the challenges -- it took some work to digitally edit out the water droplets on Eli's glasses in many of the photos, but the wet conditions created saturated colors and even lighting that was preferable, in some ways, to the harsher lighting of a sunny day.

This particular photo happened when I accidentally dropped my hat in a nearby creek and Eli's dad went to fetch it, leaving his umbrella with Eli. I had to laugh at the handsome young man standing huddled under double umbrellas. "This one's an outtake," I said as I snapped the photo of his wry grin. I'm sure it won't be his chosen senior portrait, but it's one of my favorite images from the set.

Photo of the day: Rainy morning at the Gypsy Wagon

I took this photo from the driver's seat of my car on a rainy December morning, as I waited in line for coffee at the Gypsy Wagon in Eatonville, Washington. Sure, anyone can take a mundane focused photo, but it was the abstract refraction of light and color that intrigued me as I grabbed my camera. The barista is leaning out the window here, handing a coffee to the car in front of me... can you tell?

Photo of the day: This year's gingerbread house

There are constants to every Christmas: ornaments on the tree... Christmas lights... gingerbread houses... and, of course, photographs of all of them! Here's David building this year's gingerbread house.

There are constants to every Christmas: ornaments on the tree... Christmas lights... gingerbread houses... and, of course, photographs of all of them! Here's a new ornament on our tree, celebrating my son Daniel's love of football, especially our local team, the Seahawks.

Photo of the day: Early season snow on the Mountain

Mount Rainier always looks cool, no matter what the weather, but somehow the images rising out of and through the clouds look better to me than the ones showing the mountain isolated against clear blue sky. For one thing, all of the blue-sky images look the same, but the clouds are always different, so every cloudy image is unique and dramatic.
