Photo of the day: Farewell

Farewell by The Bacher Family
Farewell, a photo by The Bacher Family on Flickr.

January 10, 2012, nine days since our friend and coworker Margaret Anderson was killed by a gunman on duty in Mount Rainier National Park. Here we are all lined up along the side of the road by Pacific Lutheran University, where Margaret's memorial service will be held, waiting for the arrival of her coffin, escorted by dozens of members of local law enforcement and emergency services. Many of these faces are friends of mine: Scott Beason at the far left, for example, who I hired as a geologist-in-park intern years ago, and who subsequently served the National Park Service as an exceptional interpreter, law enforcement ranger, and now full-time geologist. Across the road are a dozen members of our volunteer corps, who have turned out in their best volunteer uniforms to show their respect for Margaret, her coworkers, and her park.

I left the big, heavy, and indiscrete camera at home for this one. This image was taken on my iPhone. But you can see see the emotion, almost palpable in the amber morning light, as the attention is drawn to the convergence point in the distance, from whence will come the one we are waiting to honor.
