Over the summer of 2011, we spent several days at Fort Stevens State Park, camping, biking, and walking on the beach. The sunsets were fantastic. One evening I came across this solitary sandal (a sole sole) abandoned in the sand. Such artifacts intrigue me the way chips of rock capture the imagination of archeologists. What's the story here? Who left this piece of footwear behind? Did they change into leather boots and march away,or skip off in bare feet? What experience did they have along the ocean? Did they build sand castles with their children, or share a picnic with a lover? The only one that knows is the sandal, and it's not saying; so all we can do is wonder, and guess.
