For many years, this was my favorite photograph, not just for the fantastic image itself but for the experience behind it. Kelli and I went hiking to Indian Henry's Hunting Ground in Mount Rainier National Park in September of 1999, a summer following an extremely heavy snow winter. In a month when usually the final bloom is fading from the last flowers, there were avalanche lilies blooming in places on the high meadows. I've never seen a September day so gorgeous. I took this image using slide film across the little tarn in front of the backcountry patrol cabin.
