Walking along the beach in Nehalem Bay State Park, we came across this carcass of a dear half-buried in the sand. There's an eerie beauty about animal skeletons--something stark and elemental--but that doesn't make them any less icky for 12-year-olds! Stephanie spotted the carcass just as I raised my camera, and I was able to capture her first reaction. I had fun converting this to half color, half black-and-white; I didn't really think it through at the time, but now I wonder if, subconsciously, I was separating the living from the dead. Whatever the reason, on a visceral level, it works, at least for me.
