Jeanne on Wawasee
Jeanne on Wawasee 1992-1, originally uploaded by the light is all.
Jeanne, on Mount Wawasee, Indiana, May 1992. This is one of my favorite photos of all time. I love the combination of simple beauty and a natural pose.

Photo of the Day: Ballerina in the park

Ballerina in the park, originally uploaded by The Bacher Family.
A sculpture in downtown Seattle, September 24, 2009. Such a beautifully crafted image, in such an austerely urban setting.

Guest Photo of the Day: janneke

janneke, originally uploaded by smeert.
Such a simple photo, but I love the almost old-fashioned pallet of colors, the naturalistic expression (soulful, not smiling), and the slightly high-key exposure, which emphasizes the brilliant blue eyes. Photo by Steven Meert.

Archive Photo of the Day: Wheeler Peak

Wheeler Peak, originally uploaded by The Bacher Family.
I worked at Great Basin National Park, in Nevada, over the winter of 1989 to 1990. September of 1989 was so gorgeous! The autumn light in the desert is so clear, and the aspens were such a brilliant yellow.

Photo of the Day: Pooch

Pooch, originally uploaded by The Bacher Family.
My friends Tom and Mika's dog, September 11, 2009. The slightly-cocked head and the rimmed lighting make this one of my favorite photos of the year, despite having blown out some of the detail on the back and forehead. This shot would have been perfect if I had been shooting "raw"!

Guest Photo of the Day: Chickadee

Chickadee, originally uploaded by Robert Scott Photography.ca.
This is a perfectly composed image. I love the monochromatic pallet, and the ruffled feathers on the neck and belly give it just the perfect sense of being huddled against the gray winter weather. Photo by Robert Scott.

Archive Photo of the Day: Longmire at Night

Longmire at Night, originally uploaded by The Bacher Family.
The Administration Building at Longmire, in Mount Rainier National Park, on December 22, 2008. I took this picture at night, lit entirely by the light of the nearby streetlamp, which gave everything such a beautiful amber cast. Merry Christmas, everyone!

Photo of the Day: Kelli on Drift Creek Bridge

Kelli, originally uploaded by The Bacher Family.
On the bridge at Drift Creek Camp, October 31, 2009. I love it when I get such a great picture of my wife, which captures on "film" the light in her soul that makes her so beautiful!

bubble boy!, originally uploaded by mellissag.
What can I say? I love baby pictures! What a thrill the photographer must have felt when she saw this moment unfold through her lense! Photo by mellissag.

Update: The photographer has removed the direct blog link to this image. You may view it on flickr by clicking on the photo box above.

Archive Photo of the Day: Bristlecone Moon

Bristlecone Moon, originally uploaded by The Bacher Family.
An abstract arm of dead Bristlecone Pine on Wheeler Peak in Great Basin National Park, Nevada, where I worked as a park ranger in September 1989. Today, I'd use a long lense to make the moon larger, but then, all I had was my 35mm camera with the lense it came with!

Photo of the Day: Marmot

Busily getting ready for winter along the Skyline Trail in Mount Rainier National Park, September 28, 2009. I couldn't believe my luck when he paused in his labors long enough for me to compose and capture several good shots!

Guest Photo of the Day: Javier

Javier, originally uploaded by Gallo Quirico.
I've always loved the photography of Anne Geddes, which this reminds me of. I love the contrast between the man's hairy hand and the soft, unblemished skin of the baby. Perfectly lit, perfectly composed, and the look on the child's face is priceless! Photo by Gallo Quirico.

Eagle Creek Canyon, originally uploaded by Jesse Estes.
Wouldn't you just love to go here? I just love the ethereal sense of light the photographer, Jesse Estes, has captured.

Archive Photo of the Day: Independence Pass

Indy Pass, originally uploaded by The Bacher Family.
A sunrise shot of Mt. St. Helens, June 1988. I worked as a ranger at Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument during the summers of 1988 and 1989. The first summer, our staff camped out at Independence Pass for a night during training. Our camp that morning was inside a cloud, but I climbed up to the top of a nearby bluff to get this shot of the light just rimming the top of the mountain at sunrise.

Photo of the Day: Ben Longmire

Ben Longmire, originally uploaded by The Bacher Family.
"Ben Longmire," as portrayed by Chris Adix, at the after-party for Mount Rainier National Park's "Shadows of the Past" living history program, August 15, 2009. A spontaneous pose, perfectly in character, when he saw me raise the camera.

Guest Photo of the day: immersion

IMG_5266-Edit, originally uploaded by Josiah Callison.
Photo by Josiah Callison, who has beautifully captured a moment between the poses when the model's soul shined through. "Immersion" is my own title: much better than "IMG_5266-Edit," don't you think?

Archive Photo of the Day: Spirit Lake

Spirit Lake, originally uploaded by The Bacher Family.
Mt. St. Helens, July 1988 -- a view across Spirit Lake from Harmony Falls. I worked as a ranger at Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument during the summers of 1988 and 1989.

Guest Photo Set of the Day: Mountains

MOUNTAINS - Images by John Chao
John Chao is a magnificent landscape photographer who has taken pictures throughout Washington state and works with me as a volunteer at Mount Rainier National Park. He has a complete portfolio of images at photoshelter.com. I love the way he captures the way light plays on the rocks and glaciers of our Cascade volcanoes, especially photos like #1 and #32 than are crafted to pull your eye deep into the image.

Photo of the Day: Cat in the Hat

The Cat in the Hat, originally uploaded by The Bacher Family.
This particular cat is my father, at a Halloween party at Drift Creek Camp, 2009. He'd just got his face paint on and I asked for a picture. He posed, and I shot! I'd have never gotten such a great spontaneous picture if I hadn't captured it the first time.

Archive Photo of the Day: Long Lake

Long Lake, originally uploaded by The Bacher Family.
This was a case of being in just the right place at just the right time. In September 1990, I traveled out to Burlington, Vermont from Indiana, where I was working, to check out the University of Vermont Graduate School. I spent the night in the Adirondacks, and in the morning, passed this viewpoint on the edge of Long Lake. The fog was just lifting from the perfectly still water, and the light was perfect for capturing one of my all-time favorite images.

Archive Photo of the Day: An Officer's Funeral

An Officer's Funeral, originally uploaded by The Bacher Family.
In March 2007, Officer Shane Wyrsch was killed while on duty by a drunk driver. Because he worked for the U.S. Forest Service and I work for the adjacent Mount Rainier National Park, I was asked to take photos at the funeral. This is one of my favorites.

This photo is posted today in honor of the four Lakewood police officers killed in the line of duty this past Sunday. Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Officers Greg Richards, Tina Griswold, Mark Renninger, and Ronnie Owens.

Photo of the Day: 60 Years

Married 60 years, originally uploaded by The Bacher Family.
Thanksgiving day, 2009. I took a lot of portraits for family, and this old couple sat and watched the whole process. Finally I turned around and said "I need one of you, too!" They leaned in together and I captured my favorite portrait of the whole day.

Guest Photo of the Day: A child in Belize

Lloyd Smith has a great talent for capturing a glimpse of a child's soul, even when separated by language and many miles of culture.

Archive Photo of the Day: Playa Nancite

Playa Nancite, originally uploaded by The Bacher Family.
I hiked 15 kilometers to Playa Nancite while working as a volunteer in what is now Guanacaste National Park in Costa Rica to take this sunset picture on the beach, in November 1986.
